For the Curious What the Offices Mean

Masonic Lodges have used the same officer structure for centuries. Each station has a specific duty in the work of the Lodge:

  • Worshipful Master: presides over the Lodge. "Worshipful" is an old English honorific meaning worthy of respect, not an object of worship.
  • Senior Warden: second in authority; presides in the Master's absence.
  • Junior Warden: third in authority; traditionally responsible for the Craft at refreshment, including the fellowship meal.
  • Treasurer: receives and disburses Lodge funds.
  • Secretary: keeps the minutes and records, handles correspondence, and collects dues. Usually the first person a visitor or petitioner talks to.
  • Chaplain: offers prayer at the opening and closing of the Lodge.
  • Senior and Junior Deacons: carry messages and attend to candidates during degree work.
  • Tiler: guards the door of the Lodge.

Lodge officers are elected annually and installed toward the end of June. This page is updated after each installation.
