Burkburnett Lodge No. 1027 was chartered on December 12, 1910 by the Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F. & A.M., four years before the oil boom that would transform this town, and more than a century before the men who meet here today.
Our History Chartered December 12, 1910
When the Grand Lodge of Texas granted our charter in 1910, Burkburnett was a small farming and ranching community on the Red River. The discovery of oil at the Fowler well in 1918 changed everything. The population multiplied many times over in a matter of months, and the town became known nationally as the Boomtown.
Through the boom, the bust, the Depression, and every decade since, the Lodge has kept its doors open and its work going. The building on W. Williams Dr has been a fixed point for generations of Burkburnett families.
Today the Lodge also hosts the brethren of Iowa Park Lodge No. 713, who share the building in fellowship. It is a practical arrangement, and a reminder that the fraternity is larger than any one Lodge.
What We Are A Fraternity, Not a Secret Society
Freemasonry is often called a secret society, but that has never been quite right. Our buildings are marked, our members are known, our charitable work is public, and our principles are printed in books anyone can buy. What is private is the ceremonial work by which a man is initiated, passed, and raised. It is kept private so that each candidate experiences it as every Mason before him did.
A Masonic Lodge is not a religion and does not substitute for one. We require a belief in a Supreme Being, but we do not ask a man which faith he practices, and we do not discuss sectarian religion or partisan politics in Lodge. Those two rules have kept men of very different convictions meeting peaceably on the level for three centuries.
The purpose of Freemasonry is to take good men and make them better: better husbands and fathers, better neighbors, better citizens. Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F. & A.M.
In the Community Relief and Service
Texas Masons support a range of charitable efforts, and Burkburnett Lodge takes part in them:
- Masonic Home and School of Texas, providing care and education for Texas children in need.
- Texas Masonic Retirement Center, providing housing and care for aged Masons and their families.
- Scholarships for local graduating seniors.
- Lamar Masonic Scholarship and other Grand Lodge educational programs.
- Community assistance, quiet and direct, for to neighbors and to the families of Brethren.
Where We Fit The 88th Masonic District
Burkburnett Lodge No. 1027 is a constituent Lodge of the 88th Masonic District of Texas, which covers Wichita County and the surrounding area. The District is supervised by a District Deputy Grand Master appointed by the Grand Master of Masons in Texas.
Sister Lodges and appendant bodies in the District include Iowa Park No. 713, Wichita Falls No. 635, Electra No. 1067, and Faith No. 1158, along with the Order of the Eastern Star, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and Grotto bodies serving North Texas.
